Glimpse (Killer TouchPad App) Coming Soon to the iPad

January 25th, 2012 · software news

Do you know how I said that Android and iOS didn’t need more apps (and so the webOS news today meant little)? Please forget I wrote that; I am an idiot at times.

I just caught a tweet from Inglorious Apps. They developed the late and unlamented TouchPad’s killer app, and they are in the process of porting it to the iPad.

January 24th, 2012 · software news, video

Have you seen this video yet?

A trio of researchers at the KAIST Institute of Information Technology Convergence have put together demo reading app for the iPad. It doesn’t support any new ebook features, but it does have a number of innovations in how you interface with the ebook you’re reading. The researchers have studied some of the ways that we are all used to using paper books and tried to adapt them to touchscreen based tablet like the iPad.

OnSwipe Has All The Hype, But Mobstac Has the Engineers

January 24th, 2012 · software news

A few weeks back I posted a complaint about the latest release of OnSwipe, the new free iPad publishing service. A friend noticed the post and suggested that I look at Mobstac. It took me  few weeks to get  around to trying the service (CES distracted me), but I’m glad I did. Mobstac is better than OnSwipe in at least one way; it works.

I’ve only been using it today, and I plan to take a deeper look sometime soon. This post is really just  heads up because I wanted to bring Mobstac to everyone’s attention.

Coliloquy Launches Ebook Apps for the Kindle

January 17th, 2012 · kindle app, software news

I predicted on Sunday that this coming year would see more innovations in apps than in ereaders, and it looks like one developer has decided to confound the issue. Coliloquy launched their first 4 ebook apps today, and they’re exclusively available on the Kindle.

Coliloquy is joining a growing number of ebook app developers who are adapting existing stories and creating interactive reading experiences. These apps are the latest incarnation of an old genre of books.

January 13th, 2012 · software news

It’s Friday night, and that means that ebook management tool Calibre has gotten another update.

Since it’s a weekly update, I don’t usually post about it. But today’s update caught my eye because it adds support for a couple devices that aren’t on the market yet.

Amazon Releases SendToKindle

January 12th, 2012 · Amazon, Kindle, Kindle Cloud, software news

Amazon decided today to show that not all the interesting gadget news gets announced at CES. They’ve just released a new app you can install on your Windows PC.

SendToKindle  acts something like a printer driver, and it lets you select print docs as a PDF and automatically email them to your Kindle account on Amazon.com. You can also right-click on a file while looking at it in a folder and send it to your Kindle account.

Amazon Launches iPad Optimized Kindle Store

January 10th, 2012 · Amazon, Apple, software news

Today Amazon took another step towards ignoring the existence of Apple.

I got an email earlier today from a contact with Kindle PR. She wanted to bring my attention to the new Kindle Store interface.  Amazon just brought it online this week, and it was made specifically for the iPad. You can find it here: www.amazon.com/iPadKindleStore.

Silk Browser Ported to Other Tablets

January 4th, 2012 · software news

In  the endless quest to get apps running where they’re not supposed to, I bring you the tale of the Silk browser. XDA Forums  member TyHi has successfully ported this web browser from the Kindle Fire to the Kindle Fire.

Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. What he did was hack the browser so it would run on Cyanogen Mod, the open source Android firmware.  There’s a version of CM for the KF, and now Silk will run on it. And it will run on other Android devices, too.

New Update for Pandigital Novel (Black 7″) Adds Android Market

December 30th, 2011 · software news, tips and tricks

A couple hours ago I posted about a new firmware for the 9″ Novel, and after I posted that article I was inspired to go find an update for my other Pandigital Novel.

This is the cheaper, junky, 7″ tablet that is running Android v1.5. I really don’t think this tablet is worth buying; there isn’t much you can do with it due to the outdated version of Android. But lots of people keep buying it so I figure that I might as well point you in the right direction.
